For women, some of the statistics that are out there those women have a high rate of developing PTSD after a traumatic event compared to men, they are 10 times more likely to be impacted by an eating disorder and that according to the World Health Organization. 20% of mothers experience postpartum depression. This is very important because we have a desire in the Western culture for people to get back to work as soon as they can to be productive well. When people deliver a baby and the hormones shift and then somebody’s dealing with postpartum depression that co-worker who you work with, they may not be the same person for a little while until things get better until they go through some treatment and work with a doctor on these things so understanding that both men and women have challenges and that each actually have some unique challenges when it comes to mental health just based on our differences from a biological standpoint.
It’s important to understand this as a manager because we want to be able to support our people for different leave of absence programs different things like that and understand that, they will actually be in a better place if we give them a little bit more time to deal with what they’re dealing with and to not just think that oh, they just had a child. They need to come back to work or oh, this guy’s, a tough guy. This guy can deal with it. No, no, no, no, no, stop thinking that way.
