Average human brains are stuck in negative ways of thinking over 50% of the time. Becoming aware of this is the first step to increasing the amount of positive experiences running through your mind. The saying, “what we think, we become” holds a lot of weight.

Society and economics thrive on negative conditioning to get you to buy more and to feel as though you aren’t enough. The truth is, this false story is flat out wrong. From political ads attacking other people to live feeds on social media showing the worst of society, it’s no wonder why so many humans are struggling to remain positive, optimistic, and mentally healthy.

Massive action and awareness is needed if you want to make your cup more than half full.

You can become more positive and be that person who lifts others up in a time when more uplifting is needed to inspire the human spirit one connection at a time.

Here are 5 Daily Habits To Become More Positive

  1. Don’t watch the news! I once met a journalist after a workshop I was teaching, and she shared with me how empowering my course was as I discussed the reality of trauma. Like many industries, the news business never provided training on mental health, trauma, and triggers; nor did it address the reality of what happens when newscasters routinely report on trauma, death, crime, and the worst of society. That said, there’s very little value in mainstream media these days, because most of it is propaganda for one side or another. Instead of watching the news where you have no control over what you’ll see next, take the time to read through relevant publications on the things that interest you most. Be mindful of the noise you consume.
  2. Re-frame and re-train your thoughts. Take notice of every thought throughout your day for a few days. Ask yourself if the thought is true. Ask yourself why you are thinking this thought and if there is a healthier alternative. Go deep into your mind and explore the programming that’s inside. Determine if it’s time to unlearn some things in order to make room to learn more about something else.
  3. Wake up with gratitude. Here’s the deal… while you were sleeping, other people were dying in their sleep! Congrats, you made it for another day. While life may not always be smooth, remember, you have the gift of time and another day to figure yourself out in order to live your purpose and thrive. Start each morning with a gratitude check and give thanks for the gift of life.
  4. Nurture your inner-child. Beyond your title and shell of who you are in your big adult body, there’s an inner-child within you who loves to play, laugh, giggle, and grin. Think back to some of the things you did in your youth that brought you happiness, and go do them. Something as simple as singing loud in the shower impersonating your favorite opera singer or blowing bubbles on the street to lighten the mood for those serious adults passing by, will take your mind back to a time when you were free from the constraints of being who you should be, as you were 100% who you were born to be, a playful and creative individual full of life.
  5. Learn how your mind works. Study psychology and the works of Carl Jung to learn more about the depth of your psyche. Our western worldview is so limiting and closes off the full potential of human consciousness. Learn more about how your mind works and how society’s mechanisms from advertising to political propaganda work to control your mind. Yes, even in democratic nations, things like addictive smart phones and other devices are designed to control your mind, which in turn control your thoughts, emotions, and how you experience life. Learn how your mind works and how to make it work better so you can create your desired outcomes.

Life can be what you make it when you choose the right inputs. Through conscious awareness and action, you can shift your mindset from negative to positive over time. Instead of looking for a big gain, focus on micro-wins for each day. Positive mindsets, attitudes, and beliefs make the world around you a better place. As a leader, it’s important to keep working towards becoming more positive so your culture is healthy.
